International Truck and Engine Showcases New-Look International® WorkStar™, New MaxxForce™ Engines at Waste Expo 2007

Atlanta, Georgia - May 08, 2007

The next generation of waste hauling trucks will have a different look. With its redesigned hood and grill, the new-look International® WorkStar™ from International Truck and Engine Corporation, a Navistar company, looks more powerful than ever. This design allows the International WorkStar to accommodate the 2007 Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) emissions-compliant engines without dropping the radiator between the frame rails. This allows customers to maintain front engine PTO capabilities without affecting the radiator, making International’s solution unique among truck OEMs.

“Not only will the International WorkStar have a more robust hood, but we are still able to provide customers with the option for front PTO access,” said John Wadden, director of severe service marketing, International Truck and Engine. “Considering the special needs of waste customers, International’s decision to keep the front PTO option is an important feature. Many of these customers require front engine PTO provisions on their trucks.”

The new hood design also provides easy access to the engine compartment for maintenance and includes an innovative multi-piece layout so only one piece has to be replaced in the event of damage. The customer can avoid paying a high price for an entirely new hood by having the option to replace just the damaged portion of the hood at a significantly lower cost. All hood parts will be available at the nearly 900 International dealer locations across North America.

Dual air intakes provide the 2007 emissions compliant engines with ample amounts of clean air to supply the horsepower vocational customers need. The International WorkStar will accommodate MaxxForce™ 11 and MaxxForce™ 13 big bore engines, which are scheduled to be released in late 2007 as well as Cummins and Caterpillar engines with a peak rating up to 485 horsepower with 1650 lb.-ft. of torque.

In addition to the enhanced hood design and dual air intakes, the interior of the International WorkStar will also receive an upgrade with a new instrument cluster, redesigned seats, a larger, bold chrome grille and optional tilt-telescopic steering wheel to enhance driver comfort and satisfaction.

The International WorkStar offers many other outstanding features, including:

  • Wide track axles that provide superb maneuverability in congested driving conditions (up to 50-degree wheelcut, ideal for tight alleys and city streets)
  • A large wraparound windshield that gives drivers a commanding view of the road
  • The International® Diamond Logic® Electrical System that can provide a number of safety-related advantages to customers including:
    • Pre-trip exterior light inspection so drivers working alone can quickly verify that truck exterior lights are working properly
    • Park brake alarm that activates if the door is opened without setting the park brake
    • Automatic headlight activation when windshield wipers are started
    • An alarm warning to drivers before the truck moves forward that the waste body is in an engaged position
    • A speed control to keep the truck from moving at normal speeds until the waste body is fully stowed

These innovative features help customers address their commercial truck needs on a daily basis. In fact, International has received the J.D. Power and Associates award for “Highest in Customer Satisfaction Among Vocational Segment Class 8 Trucks”, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2006 Heavy-Duty Truck Customer Satisfaction StudySM released August 16th, 2006. Customer satisfaction for the vocational award is measured on four factors: Performance, Quality, Warranty and Cost of Ownership

“International's line of severe service trucks is built specifically to meet the demanding needs of customers in heavy-duty vocational segments such as construction, waste, oil field and municipalities,” said Phil Christman, vice president and general manager, Severe Service Vehicle Center, International Truck and Engine.

“We're proud that customers recognize our commitment to them,” said Christman. “We take great pride in interacting with our customers to learn more about their business and what we can do to make their jobs more efficient with International's truck and transportation solutions.”
